Regarding smilies Get More, it works fine in older versions as well, I tested it while testing all reported bugs in Focus theme.
It is possible in your forum, some plugin is causing issue.
I will suggest giving try using latest version first and then we will see what's causing the issue.

I know how to import a theme but how do you upgrade a theme?
